MDF

Telstra or my service provider have connected and tagged my service to the 'MDF', what does this mean?

For commercial, apartment blocks, retail and some other locations, the Telstra lead-in cable to your property or building may have an MDF.
The MDF is Telstras Network Boundary

A MDF is a
telecommunications Main Distribution Frame, it has 'modules' in which the carriers, ie Telstra, lead in cable terminates on, this may be 10 pairs, 50 pairs, 2,000 pairs or more. There are then additional modules in which all the 'building' cabling is connected to, this is the cabling from each socket, tenant or other distribution frame. Cross connections between Telstras side and the customers side is done via jumper wires, ones all pairs have been traced and verified.

Even if your service is NOT billed through Telstra, ie another 'service provider' such as iprimus, iinet, dodo ect, it may still use Telstras cable and infrastructure, which is being 'leased' from Telstra who are the 'carrier' as a result it will be Telstra, or authorized contractor performing the connections and provisioning to the MDF.

Telstras responsibility is only to connect the new service or fix a fault up to the MDF, beyond the MDF is the customers responsibility and will require the customer to arrange a Telecommunications Registered Cabler to connect it past the MDF.

If a new service is being connected, Telstra (or its contractors) will connect to, and test at the MDF, they may 'tag' the pair for identification by the cabler which will connect it to the cable or pair that will go to the required outlet.
